With 413 runs at an average of 82.6, Kane Williamson was arguably the best batsman amongst both teams in the recently concluded three Test series. The New Zealand No. 3 batsman, long mentioned as one of the best New Zealand talent to emerge in recent years now has his eyes set on the shorter format of the game, with two tour ending T20Is to be played at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica.
Williamson keen to end tour on a high
The right handed batsman is likely to open with all-rounder, James Neesham in the two matches, the first of which is scheduled to be played on Sunday, July 6th. "It's always a challenge and one you deal with quite a bit if you are fortunate enough to be involved in the different formats but you adapt your game like you do to different conditions and different teams," Williamson said.
"A change in format obviously means an up in tempo and you're training and preparation obviously goes according to those focuses," he added.
New Zealand achieved a historic 2-1 series victory over West Indies in the recently concluded Test series, and the young batsman wanted to finish off the tour on a high. "It can be a challenge when you spend so much time away from home and you get close to leaving, but the guys are all focused on these two T20s and they want to enjoy them and it would be great to come away with some wins," he said.
"We are always backing ourselves. We know the West Indies are one of the best teams in the world, if not the best team in the world, at this format so we know it will be a good challenge. The nature of T20 cricket is quite inconsistent. The fast pace that it's played at and the high risk that is involved - we know we have to play with that freedom and use the skill we have got to come out and play," he added.
West Indies are a much stronger unit in the shortest format of the game. Although they are still missing Dwayne Bravo, the return of Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree has bolstered the squad. New Zealand coach, Mike Hesson wasn't taking his opponents lightly. "They've got a lot of match winners," he said. "Throughout their line-up they've got guys that can win a game by themselves - that's the sign of a good T20 side," he added.
