Sania Mirza & India’s campaign at US Open 2016 comes to an end: Sania Mirza and her double’s partner Barbora Strycova crashed out of the US Open Doubles quarterfinal after losing to top seeds Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic. They were beaten 6-7 (3), 1-6 by the French pair.
Sania, who is a top-ranked doubles star, held the 4-1 lead they’d got at the start. Up until the scoreboard read, 5-2 the pair was comfortable and received two break points to close out the first set. But they couldn’t provide the effective punch to seal it and the French pair made them pay for it.
Mirza’s serve was broken in the first instance itself after facing three break points. Garcia leveled the score at 5-5 by holding her serve steadily.
At 6-6 the scores were locked and a tiebreaker was needed to break the impasse. Garcia and Kristina gained a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker. The top seeds hence won the first tiebreaker 7-3 and were at ease.
The domination of the duo continued unhindered into the second set. Strycova’s serve was broken to gain a lead of 2-0 by the French pair. Sania and Barbora couldn’t save their sinking ship as they were subjected to extreme pressure and finally succumbed to it, finding no other way to plug the leakage of points from their side.
A light rain in the middle of the match, which saw the players going to their locker rooms, could’ve potentially stopped the momentum of the top-seeded pair. However, as the play resumed they continued to decimate Sania and Barbora with a 4-0 lead.
In the second set, the French top seeds won the set 6-1 which ended Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova’s run in the tournament.
This has effectively ended the Indian campaign at the US Open this year. Sania was India’s last representative at the US Open after Rohan Bopanna and his Canadian teammate Gabriela Dabrowski lost in the mixed doubles quarterfinals on Monday.
