Wrestler Sakshi Malik collects 1st medal for India in 58 Kg category: India’s Sakshi Malik bagged a bronze medal in the wrestling 58kg category for India after she triumphed over Aisuluu Tynybekova. She won with a respectable score of 8 against 5. In the first half of the match, the score was against Sakshi, 0-5. The later has of the game was tied for a long time with 5-5. It was in the last few minutes of the match that Malik scored the last three brownie points and enthralled the audience and her supporters.

Malik got another chance at a medal after her quarterfinal opponent Valeria Koblova reached the gold medal match.

In the quarterfinal match at the Women’s Wrestling event at Rio 2016, Malik was defeated by some quick moves from Koblova. The finals score was 9-2. Sakshi’s defeat in this match made her lose hopes for the gold or silver medal for India. This was the time that Malik eyed the bronze in the following match.

With this amazing win, India finally sighed relief as it ended the long wait for an Olympic Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Malik has become the first Indian female wrestler to ever win an Olympic Medal.

Rohtak-born Sakshi has won a silver medallist at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the past.

The Uttar Pradesh government immediately announced that she will be honoured with the coveted Rani Laxmi Bai award of the UP Government.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday at a Raksha Bandhan ceremony.

Akhilesh Yadav said: “I, on behalf of the state of Uttar Pradesh, congratulate her on this momentous occasion. Sakshi has made the nation proud by winning bronze at the Rio Olympics.”

The Rani Laxmi Bai award carries a cash prize of Rs 3.11 lakh, a citation and a statue of Rani Laxmi Bai.
