PV Sindhu upsets World No. 2 Wang Yihan of China to enter Semi Finals of Rio Olympics 2016: India’s PV Sindhu proved her mettle at the Rio Olympics 2016 Badminton event by upsetting world number two Wang Yihan of China. Sindhu was playing for securing a spot in the semifinals of the Olympics.
With yesterday’s classic win, Sindhu is now officially the second Indian women Badminton player to reach the semi-final of Olympic Games. In the past, it was Saina Nehwal, the famous badminton ace from India who has secured a spot in the semis at the 2012 London Games.
Prior to the quarterfinals at Rio, Sindhu and Wang have already played against each other six times at different World level tournaments. Maximum of the times, it was Wang who won these matches, except for the Denmark Open, last year, where Sindhu grabbed the title after defeating Wang.
Wang has also defeated Saina Nehwal in the semifinals of the London Olympics four years ago.
“I’ve played Yihan many times before, winning some, and losing some. I just try to give my best on the day, because it’s always a tough game.”Sindhu said.
“It was tough today, against the World No.2. She played well in both games, especially the second to tie the scores at 18-18. I can’t say that I got lucky with the win since she also played brilliantly.
Sindhu opened the interesting game with serving first. As the game moved on, Wang gained some points leaving the score to 8-12. In not time, India’s PV Sindhu jumped back into intense action and gave her best to tie the score midway of the match to a respectable 15-15.
With this amazing win, Sindhu has held up India’s hopes for an Olympic medal at Rio 2016. Sindhu will play against Nozomi Okuhara of Japan on Thursday at 5.50 pm IST.
