Australia refuses to send athletes to Rio Olympic Village: The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said in a statement Sunday that its athletes are staying in hotels rather than the village due to the pathetic condition of the official accommodation provided for the athletes in Rio.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro has offered to get a kangaroo for the Australian Olympic team after they refused to move into the Athletes’ Village over safety fears.

“We want them to feel at home here,” Eduardo Paes said. “I almost feel like putting a kangaroo to jump up and down in
front of their building.” AOC’s spokesperson Mike Tancred told a Brazilian newspaper “we do not need kangaroos, we need plumbers to account for the many puddles found in the apartments.”
Although, the New Zealand Olympic team will move into the athletes’ village in Rio today despite their Australian counterparts boycotting their official accommodation.
Reports say that the athletes’ village still  continues to be plagued by problems, in just a few days to the onset of the games in Rio.

Blocked toilets, leaking pipes, exposed wiring, darkened stairwells, no lighting and dirty floors have led the AOC to blatantly reject their assigned apartment tower blocks uninhabitable. Australian Olympic boss Kitty Chiller also revealed that in operations areas water has leaked through the ceiling, resulting in large puddles on the floor around cabling and wiring.

“Due to a variety of problems in the village including gas, electricity and plumbing, I have decided that no Australian team member will move into our allocated building,” Chiller said in a statement.

The IOC has recommended plumbing stress tests and fire safety tests be carried out throughout the village, all of which National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have been invited to observe.
