Lionel Messi & his Father Handed 21 months Jail Term For Tax Fraud- Yes, you heard it right! Barcelona striker who recently retired from International football has been handed a 21 month jail term for tax charges by Barcelona court. Leo and his father Jorge Horacio Messi are accused of evading €4.1 million in tax between financial year 2007-2009.
Though the news might be shocker in football world but there is some relief for Messi and his fans because Messi will not have to actually serve this term. According to Spanish law, if a suspect receives a prison sentence of less than two years, they can serve it under probation. It means that Messi and his father probably won’t serve jail time.
The court has ordered the football star to pay €2 million & his father to fork out €1.5 million.
Earlier in June, Messi had declared that he had no idea of what he was signing or how his money was managed. He had stated that he is only worried about playing football and denied the wrongdoings.
He also admitted that e had a bad habit of signing official and important documents without reading them as he trusted his father and his financial advisers.
The father-son duo may appeal their sentences in the Spanish supreme court.
