Perth Scorchers sign Ian Bell for the 2016-17 season of the BBL- English veteran Ian Bell has been signed for Perth Scorchers in the upcoming season of the Big Bash League 2016-17. He’s the second import from England joining the team after countryman David Willey joined recently.
Bell, who hasn’t played for England since he was dropped from the squad late last year, scored 489 runs at an Avg of 40.75 in this season’s NatWest T20 Blast. He represents the Birmingham Bears and was also the fifth highest run scoring batsman in the series.
In an international career spanning more than a decade, he has played 118 Tests, scored 7727 runs and made 22 centuries. He retired from One Day Internationals in August 2015 as England’s record run-scorer in the format with 5,416 runs in 161 matches.
The 34-year old’s name has been suggested for a possible recall in the Test side for England’s Tour of Bangladesh and India. Even if he does get selected, his commitment to international duties won’t get into the way of playing for Perth Scorchers. The last scheduled match against India is on 20th December and the Scorchers fight it out against Adelaide only on 23rd December.
The Warwickshire captain isn’t a stranger to Perth as he has played multiple matches here for England and also played with Perth club side University in 2003-04.
“I’m delighted to be coming back to play in Perth for the Scorchers in this year’s Big Bash,” Bell said.
“I love the city having played there earlier in my career and to work with Justin Langer will be superb.”
Justin Langer is the coach of Perth Scorchers, who are by far the most successful team in BBL history, winning the title twice and making it to every series final so far. Langer said,”He’s played at the international level for more than decade so brings experience and leadership, and we’re delighted to have him on board,”
He’s the second senior English cricket player to play in the BBL after Stuart Broad struck a deal with Hobart Hurricanes.
